9-1-1 GIS Database
LETA contracts with the City of Fort Collins to maintain the 9-1-1 GIS database.
To maintain the database, the Fort Collins GIS staff receives data from a variety of sources, including the planning departments from the respective towns, cities and the county.
The GIS staff reviews the GIS data checking for any updates to the information. For example, when a new street is formed or a new subdivision is being built, this information is received and the GIS staff creates a mapping layer to reflect that information.
Once the mapping layers are combined from the various entities, they are distributed back out to the 9-1-1 centers for deployment in their Computer Aided Dispatch systems (CAD). The CAD system allows for viewing of the various GIS layers and very specific details of the layers known as attributes.
The 9-1-1 map allows the dispatchers to have another tool to assist them in helping you. The dispatcher is essentially deprived from being able to see your emergency. The 9-1-1 map creates a visual aide to help the dispatcher see the address of your emergency.
